I have always loved the classic design of the Navy chair. It is lightweight, a little retro, and can work in so many residential and commercial spaces. Well, now Design Within Reach has come out with this version of a red Navy chair made of 111 recycled coca-cola bottles. Isn't it the coolest? It's totally made of a resuable product.
A little history: The "1006 chair" as it was originally called was commissioned by the U.S. Navy in WWII. They needed chairs for their warships that could withstand torpedo blasts, were seaworthy, and had an overall practicality to them. So, the Electrical Machine and Equipment Company (now called Emeco) worked with Navy engineers to develop an all-aluminum chair that could stand up to most anything. And it has--it's 2012 and we're still buying up the latest versions of this super-smart chair.
I like the whole concept and I especially like the pop of red that it brings to a space. Use it as a kitchen desk chair and the whole room will have a playful vibe.
