Tell It Like It Is

Lately, I’ve felt like I’ve been going through a bit of a transition. I’m not exactly sure what kind of transition. I mean, is there an equivalent of going through menopause when you’re in your 20s? The kind of transition where you finally know just how you like your coffee in the morning, and you’re slowly focusing less on how others look at you and more on what you think of yourself?

I’m not sure, but I do know that I’m not the only one experiencing it. Seems to me like transitions are poppin’ up all over the place. Last night, I had drinks with some friends when the topic of one friend’s bad break-ups came up. No sooner had the words left her mouth when everyone began lecturing her on how “everything happens for a reason” and “time heals all wounds” blah blah blah. Is anyone else sick of hearing that? I mean, can we just go ahead and retire those phrases? How about this: Your break-up sucks. You feel like crap and you’re probably going to continue feeling like crap for a little longer. But then you’re going to wake up one day and decide that it’s time not to feel like crap anymore. So you’ll brush your hair and maybe you’ll even get a pedicure. You’ll move on. As one of my friends said, “Why would you want to be with a locomotive who just moves you along when you could be with someone who motivates you along?” (I’m still not entirely sure what that means, but I’m pretty sure it boils down to don’t date assholes.)

So here’s to all you other guys and gals that are going through some other transitional period in life. Maybe it was a breakup. Maybe it was physically getting up and starting to move. Or maybe it was getting rid of your favorite ratty sweat pants (I found this to be particularly difficult). Regardless, know that everyone is going through some sort of little transition in their life right now. Because I don’t know about y’all, but it gives me a little comfort knowing that I’m not the only one making some changes.
