Beer lovers, unite! Charleston Beer Week 2018 will be celebrating our community's local beer scene from Friday, September 7th through Saturday, September 15th! In a city with an exponential growth in quality beer and appealing breweries, this is a great opportunity to try some of the delicious brews that the city of Charleston has to offer! Here’s a roundup of a few can't-miss events happening across the Lowcountry during Charleston Beer Week!
Friday, September 7th
Start the week off right with the Hoe Down Throw Down and Goat Races at Low Tide Brewing Company on Johns Island. Goat Races (that’s right GOAT RACES!), a petting zoo and other fun farm festivities will be taking place starting at 5:00 PM. Burden Farms cheese and milk products will be on hand, as well as Low Tide’s (always) great selection of cold brews.
Saturday, September 8th
There Will Be Hops – and we are HERE for it. Charles Towne Fermentory is bringing together over a dozen hop-tastic options from breweries up and down the east coast. This pay as you go event will also include live music and food and starts at 2:00 PM. When you’ve had your fill of hops, head over to Beer & A Movie Night at Freehouse Brewery where there will be over 14 organic choices of beer, food trucks and a movie screening of “Strange Brew” beginning at 8:00 PM on the Ashley River.
Sunday, September 9th
Did someone say Beer Week Brunch?! That’s right, head to House of Brews in Mount Pleasant where they have teamed up with the local chefs of Embers and Ashes. Tickets are $60/each and you must call to reserve your spot. Back on the peninsula, Edmond’s Oast Brewing Company will be hosting a Cask Bask where they will be showcasing at least 10 casks, honoring the traditional method of delivering draft beer to the people. These one-off cask treatments mean there’s something different and fun for everyone, but don’t wait to show up – once they’re gone, they’re gone! This pay as you go Great Cask Bask starts at 11:00 AM.
Monday, September 10th
Monday is all about the pairings! Cooper River Brewing will be joining forces with Woodward Tavern to offer slider and speciality beer pairings, and Coleman Public House will host Palmetto Brewery to offer five courses of food, beer and fun. The events at Woodward Tavern and Coleman Public House both begin at 6:00 PM.
Tuesday, September 11th
Looking for an early Oktoberfest? Look no further than Westbrook Brewing Company. They’ll be celebrating with their own traditional lagers as well as other German brewers, as well as special Gose variants. If exercise is more your thing, try the inaugural Commonhouse Mile and Pacer Dash (followed by some twelve-ounce curls, maybe?). The family-inclusive one-mile race finishes and starts at Commonhouse Aleworks, and costs $25 to enter.
Wednesday, September 12th
For you margarita and beer lovers out there, join Revelry Brewing and Mex 1 for the ultimate collaboration as they debut their Patron Barrel-Aged Margarita Gose called "Amigose." 16oz bottles will be available at The Hold starting at 7:00 PM.
Thursday, September 13th
Disclaimer: Good luck picking which event to go to on September 13th! You may choose to start your day by drinking to save turtles at Holy City Brewing, with turtles on site beginning at 4:00 PM. Then, head to Rusty Bull Brewing where they’ll be celebrating International Chocolate Day with flight and dessert pairings by Kaminsky’s Dessert Cafe. Whether it’s a tender heart for saving animals or a sweet tooth that you possess – these events are sure to start your thirsty Thursday off right.
Friday, September 14th
Friday night will be a fabulous opportunity to try a ton of local brews at several of the Beer Week events. Battle of Local Brews at Pour Taproom will feature a competition to see which local brewery kicks their keg first. This competition will take place from 4:00 – 9:00 PM, and will feature food specials and live music. You can also check out the All Charleston Tap Takeover at Closed for Business starting at 5:00 PM, where all of their taps will feature selections from local Charleston breweries. Wear your favorite local brewery gear and be entered to win their beer week raffle!
Saturday, September 15th
Have the opportunity to take home a new furry friend at Palmetto Brewing Company’s Tails and Ales Pup Run. Choose from a 5k course or one-mile course, with $1 per pint sold going to the Charleston Animal Society. Also check out another Oktoberfest event featuring Sierra Nevada beers at Bohemian Bull, with six stations for food and beer pairings.
So whether your local craft palette is an experienced one, or if you’re just getting to know the local brews – these events and more are sure to provide you with lots of delicious selection during Charleston Beer Week. After all, the best days to drink beer are the days that end in ‘y.’
